Buying a refurbished phone in India: what to check first
Refurbished is not a single thing. The word covers everything from a box-opened return to a phone rebuilt from three others.
What the word covers
"Refurbished" describes a process, not a condition. At the good end it means a returned phone that was tested, cleaned, given a new battery and boxed again. At the bad end it means a damaged handset repaired with whatever parts were cheapest.
The difference is invisible in a listing photo, which is why the questions below matter more than the grade letter on the box.
The questions to ask before paying
- What was replaced? Battery, display, back glass, charging port — a seller who cannot answer has not opened the phone.
- Is the display original? A non-genuine panel is the most common substitution and the one that most affects long-term value.
- What is the battery health? Anything under 85% on a phone sold as refurbished suggests the cell was not replaced.
- What warranty comes with it, in writing? Six months is a reasonable floor; "seller warranty" with no document is not a warranty.
- Is the IMEI clean? Check it yourself on CEIR before money moves.
Grades, and what they usually mean

Grade names are not standardised across sellers — treat them as a starting point for questions.
The first ten minutes after it arrives
- Dial \*#06# and match the IMEI to the invoice and the box.
- Check battery health in settings and screenshot it.
- On iPhone, open Settings › General › About and read Parts and Service History.
- Run through every camera, both speakers, the microphone, all buttons and every charging accessory.
- Display a plain white and a plain black image at full brightness to catch dead pixels and burn-in.
- Confirm the phone is signed out of any previous account and not asking for a Google or Apple ID.
When refurbished is the right buy
It works best one or two generations behind the current flagship, where the discount against new is large and the software support window is still open for years. It works worst on budget phones, where the saving is small and the support window may already be closing.
And if you are buying refurbished because your current phone is dying, remember the other half of the transaction — what your old one is worth usually covers a good part of the purchase.

- Yes. Enter the IMEI on the government's CEIR portal, which lists handsets reported lost or stolen in India.
