Removing iCloud Activation Lock before you sell an iPhone

Activation Lock is the reason a wiped iPhone can still be useless to its next owner. Clearing it takes two minutes if you still have the phone.

What Activation Lock does

When Find My iPhone is switched on, the device's serial and IMEI are tied to your Apple ID on Apple's activation servers. After any erase, the phone asks for that Apple ID before it will complete setup.

It is the reason stolen iPhones have little resale value, and the reason an honest seller who forgets this step ends up with a failed sale and a phone in someone else's hands.

If you still have the phone

  1. Back up: Settings › [your name] › iCloud › iCloud Backup › Back Up Now.
  2. Unpair an Apple Watch if one is paired.
  3. Settings › [your name] › Find My › Find My iPhone › toggle off, entering your Apple ID password.
  4. Settings › [your name] › scroll down › Sign Out.
  5. Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Erase All Content and Settings.

Then start the phone and check: if setup asks for an Apple ID, the sign-out did not complete and you should repeat steps 3 and 4.

If the phone is already erased and still locked

You can release it remotely, as long as you know the Apple ID it is attached to:

  1. Go to account.apple.com or iCloud.com on any browser and sign in with that Apple ID.
  2. Open the Devices section (or Find My › All Devices).
  3. Select the iPhone and choose Remove from Account.
  4. Confirm. The phone may need a restart before setup proceeds cleanly.

If you do not know the Apple ID

This is the hard case, and it comes up when a phone was bought second-hand and never properly transferred. There is no legitimate bypass. Apple's own route is a proof-of-ownership request: the original purchase invoice, with serial or IMEI, submitted through Apple Support.

Services advertising "iCloud unlock" either fail, install something you do not want, or produce a phone that re-locks at the next update. Before buying any used iPhone, check that it is signed out — and check the IMEI on CEIR while you are at it.

Selling an iPhone that is still locked

You cannot, in practice. Buyback services will not complete the purchase, and a private buyer has bought a paperweight. If you are selling on behalf of a family member, get them to sign out from their own Apple ID before the pickup slot — not during it.
