Selling an old Xiaomi or Redmi phone in India
Redmi phones are the most-sold handsets in India and among the fastest to lose value. Timing matters more here than anywhere else.

The Mi account trap
Xiaomi phones carry a Mi account with its own find-device lock. Reset the phone with it attached and the next owner meets a Mi account prompt that only you can clear — the same problem as Google's FRP, with a different logo.
- Settings › Mi Account › sign out.
- Settings › Passwords & accounts › remove the Google account.
- Settings › Additional settings › Backup & reset › Erase all data.
- Boot and confirm setup does not ask for a Mi or Google account.
Why budget phones need selling sooner
A ₹14,000 Redmi that loses 45% in its first year loses ₹6,300 — a smaller number than a flagship's drop, but a much larger share of what you paid. And the floor arrives quickly: once a budget phone is three years old, the difference between selling it and keeping it is a few hundred rupees.
The practical advice is blunt: if a budget phone is no longer your daily driver, sell it this month rather than next year. It will not be worth meaningfully less next month — it will be worth almost nothing in two years.
Inspection notes
- Camera island glass — Xiaomi's raised modules crack easily and are graded separately from the back panel.
- Charging port lint — a port that will not charge reads as a fault; clean it before the visit.
- Bloatware and ads — irrelevant to grading, but a clean reset speeds up the check.
- Battery health — use Security app › Battery, or an app if the model does not report it.
HyperOS, MIUI and the update question
Xiaomi's update policy varies sharply across the range, and buyers of used Redmi phones have learned to ask. A Redmi Note with two years of updates left and one with none are not the same product, whatever the spec sheet says.
- Check Settings › About phone › HyperOS or MIUI version, and note the Android version alongside it.
- Install the final available update before selling — a phone that arrives current inspects faster and looks maintained.
- If the phone was ever flashed with a global ROM on Indian hardware, or vice versa, say so. It affects updates and it is visible in settings.
- An unlocked bootloader should be relocked. It is treated as a modification and complicates both warranty and grading.
One more Xiaomi-specific point: the Security app's storage cleaner does not remove account data. Signing out of the Mi account is a separate step, and it is the one that decides whether the next owner can use the phone.
