The checklist for selling your phone before you upgrade

Upgrading and selling collide badly if you do them in the wrong order. Here is the order that works.

Illustration of a checklist beside an old and a new phone

Two weeks before

  • Get a quote on the old phone and note the figure. Prices fall around launches — see the best time to sell.
  • Find the box, the bill and the original charger.
  • Check the IMEI on CEIR if the phone was bought second-hand.
  • Use any remaining warranty on faults that are covered.

The day the new phone arrives

  1. Set up the new phone using the platform transfer tool while the old one is still fully working.
  2. Move authenticator apps deliberately, one service at a time.
  3. Move WhatsApp with its own in-app backup and restore.
  4. Transfer the eSIM, or move the physical SIM.
  5. Check banking and UPI apps work on the new phone before touching the old one.

The day before pickup

  1. Take a final backup of the old phone.
  2. Sign out of Google, Apple and any manufacturer account.
  3. Turn off Find My Device or Find My iPhone.
  4. Factory reset and confirm setup asks for nothing.
  5. Charge it above 50% and set the accessories aside together.

At handover

  • Confirm the final figure before anything moves.
  • Wait for the UPI credit in your own app.
  • Photograph the IMEI and keep the order ID.
  • Hand over only what was in the quote — keep your case, protector and memory card.

The whole visit should take about ten minutes when the checklist above is done.

The week-by-week version

If you know roughly when you are upgrading, spreading the work over three weeks removes almost all of the risk and most of the annoyance.

WhenDo thisWhy now
3 weeks outQuote the old phone; use remaining warranty on any faultAuthorised repairs take days, and a covered fix is free money
2 weeks outFind the box, bill and charger; check the IMEINothing is worse than hunting for an invoice on pickup day
1 week outClear storage, sort photos, note which apps hold dataBackups are faster and restores are cleaner
Day 0Set up the new phone, move SIM, verify bankingThe old phone is still there if something fails
Day +1Back up, sign out, reset, book the pickupValue falls every week the phone sits idle

The only step people regularly skip is the last one. A phone that is fully wiped and ready to go tends to sit in a drawer for another month, quietly losing a few hundred rupees a week.

Frequently asked questions

Should I sell my old phone before or after buying the new one?
Get the quote before, sell after the new phone is set up and verified. That keeps you covered if the new device has a problem, without losing much value in a week.
What is the riskiest part of upgrading?
Two-factor authenticator apps. Move them deliberately before wiping the old phone, or you can lock yourself out of your own accounts.
How long should I keep the old phone after upgrading?
Long enough to confirm banking, UPI and messaging all work on the new phone — usually a day or two. Beyond that you are just losing value.
Can I sell the case and screen protector with it?
They earn nothing in the price book. Keep them, or pass them on separately.
How far ahead should I quote my old phone before upgrading?
About three weeks. That leaves time for an in-warranty repair if one is worth doing, and it puts the sale ahead of any launch that would reset prices downward.
