How to transfer data from your old phone to a new one
Platform transfer tools move almost everything. The gap is small, specific, and painful if you find it after wiping the old phone.

What the built-in tools do well
Android to Android: the setup wizard's cable or wireless copy moves apps, accounts, settings, call logs, messages and photos if they were not already in the cloud.
iPhone to iPhone: Quick Start moves effectively everything including app data and Apple Watch pairing, and it is the most complete transfer of any platform combination.
Across platforms: Move to iOS and its Android counterpart move contacts, calendars, photos and messages, but app data largely does not survive the trip.
The things that need doing by hand
| What | Why it needs attention | How |
|---|---|---|
| Two-factor authenticator | Codes are device-bound | Use the app's export/transfer feature before wiping |
| Not fully covered by platform backups | In-app backup, then restore on the new phone | |
| Banking and UPI apps | Re-verify against the SIM | Install and verify on the new phone with the SIM in it |
| eSIM | Separate from data | Transfer in Settings, or ask your operator |
| Offline files | Downloads folder often skipped | Copy manually or upload to cloud |
| Password manager | Sometimes device-locked | Confirm login on the new phone before wiping |
The order that avoids trouble
- Charge both phones and connect to a stable network.
- Run the platform transfer tool during new-phone setup.
- Move the SIM or eSIM to the new phone.
- Verify banking, UPI and messaging on the new phone.
- Move authenticator codes, service by service.
- Restore WhatsApp from its own backup.
- Use the new phone as your daily driver for a day.
- Only then wipe the old phone and book the pickup.
What not to bother moving
- Years of duplicated screenshots — sort them in the cloud instead.
- Apps you have not opened in six months.
- Old WhatsApp media, which is usually the bulk of a slow restore.
- Cached offline maps and streaming downloads; they re-download.
When something does not come across
Transfers mostly work. When they do not, the failure is nearly always one of four, and all four are recoverable while the old phone still works.
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| App installed but empty | App data not covered by the transfer | Use the app's own backup or export |
| WhatsApp asks to restore and finds nothing | Backup made to a different account or platform | Re-run the backup on the old phone, same account |
| Banking app refuses to register | SIM not yet in the new phone | Move the SIM first, then register |
| Photos missing from the gallery | Local-only files never synced | Copy the DCIM folder manually |
That is the argument for keeping the old handset working for a day or two: every one of these fixes takes minutes with the old phone in hand and is close to impossible once it has been wiped and collected.
Frequently asked questions
- Does everything transfer to a new phone automatically?
- Nearly, on the same platform. Authenticator apps, WhatsApp, banking apps and eSIM profiles need separate attention, and app data rarely survives an Android-to-iPhone move.
- How do I move WhatsApp to a new phone?
- Back up inside WhatsApp on the old phone, install WhatsApp on the new one, verify the same number and restore when prompted. Do this before wiping the old device.
- When should I wipe my old phone?
- After the new phone has been your daily driver for at least a day and every account has been verified on it.
- Do I need to transfer my eSIM separately?
- Yes. eSIM transfer is a separate step in settings, or a request to your operator, and is not part of the data copy.
- What if an app has no data after the transfer?
- App data is often not included in a platform transfer. Use the app's own export or backup on the old phone — which is why you should not wipe it until everything is verified on the new one.
