What a storage upgrade is really worth at resale

What we measured

We price 1,327 phone models across 22 brands for buyback in India, and every model is priced per storage variant. That lets us answer a question buyers ask constantly and almost nobody answers with data: when you pay extra for a bigger drive, how much of it comes back when you sell?

We isolated every case in our own price book where one model is priced at two capacities exactly one doubling apart — 762 pairs across 666 models — and took the median difference. Medians rather than averages, because a handful of very expensive handsets would otherwise dominate.

The answer is that a storage upgrade returns far less than most people assume, and the more you spend the worse it gets.

The return shrinks at every step

Read that bottom row carefully. Moving from 512GB to 1TB — a step that costs ₹20,000 or more on a flagship when new — adds a median of ₹2,425 to what the phone is worth secondhand.

On the most expensive phones the rupee amounts rise but the percentages keep falling. Above ₹50,000 of resale value, a doubling returns a median 4.0%, or ₹3,105. Under ₹10,000, it returns 7.7% — but only ₹370.

Apple returns the least of any brand

Apple charges the most for storage upgrades new and returns the least on them secondhand — the worst combination on this list.

A worked example: the iPhone 16 Pro Max

The iPhone 16 Pro Max launched in India at ₹1,34,900 for 256GB and ₹1,64,990 for 1TB — a ₹30,090 premium for the larger drive, paid by whoever bought it new.

Our current buyback offer for those two phones in top working condition is ₹87,530 and ₹92,380. The extra 768GB is worth ₹4,850 — a 16% return on what it cost.

Samsung is not exempt. A Galaxy S24 Ultra with 1TB is worth ₹1,300 more than the 256GB version at our prices — 1.9%, for four times the storage.

Why the base variant still ages worst

None of this means base storage is the safe choice. Second owners buy used phones to keep for years, and a 128GB phone that is already three-quarters full is a phone with a short future. As app and photo sizes grow, the base tier becomes the first variant buyers refuse.

The honest reading of our data is narrower than either extreme: storage barely moves resale value in either direction, so it should be bought for how you will use the phone, not as an investment. If you genuinely fill 256GB, buy 512GB — for the four years you own it, not for the day you sell it.

Phones with a microSD slot narrow the gap further, because a buyer can fix the problem for a few hundred rupees.

How to confirm your variant in thirty seconds

Quoting the wrong storage tier is the most common cause of a revised price at pickup, and it is entirely avoidable.

• iPhone: Settings › General › About › Capacity. The figure shown is the marketing size, which is what a price book uses.
• Android: Settings › Storage. If it reports something like 117GB, that is a 128GB phone — usable space is always lower than the label.
• Either: the retail box lists the variant on the barcode label, and the invoice normally repeats it.
• RAM is separate. Some Indian listings name RAM and storage together ("8/256"). Price books key off storage, but quote both if the flow asks.

If a phone was bought abroad, check that the variant even existed in India — some tiers are region-specific, and a quote flow may not list it. Where it does not, choose the nearest and mention it at pickup.

Method and limits

• Figures are sellyourphone.in buyback offers for a handset in top working condition, current as of August 2026. They are a floor on what a phone is worth, not a ceiling — a private sale may fetch more.
• 762 storage pairs across 666 models were measured; only exact doublings of the same model are compared.
• New prices in the iPhone example are Apple India launch prices for that model, not current retail; the handset is no longer sold new by Apple.
• This measures resale uplift by capacity. It does not measure depreciation against original purchase price, which would require launch pricing for every model.
