Selling a carrier-locked or imported phone in India

Carrier locks are rare on Indian retail phones and common on imported ones — and they cut resale value sharply.

How to tell if a phone is locked

  1. Insert a SIM from a different operator.
  2. Restart the phone and look for a message such as "SIM not supported" or a request for an unlock code.
  3. On iPhone, check Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock. "No SIM restrictions" means unlocked.
  4. On Android, look for a Network unlock or SIM lock entry in Settings › About or the dialler diagnostics.

What it costs at resale

A network-locked phone can only be used on one operator, so the buyer pool shrinks to people already on that network — and in India, to people who can even find that network's SIM if the lock originated abroad.

Expect a substantial deduction, and on many price books a lower band entirely. An imported handset without Indian warranty and without an Indian invoice compounds it, since the age band usually needs a bill.

Unlocking it legitimately

The only reliable route is the carrier that locked it. Most operators unlock on request once the contract or instalment plan is complete, and the unlock is applied to the IMEI rather than the SIM.

Third-party unlock services vary from legitimate resellers of carrier requests to software hacks that re-lock at the next update. If a service asks you to install anything on the phone, it is the second kind.

Selling one as it is

It is perfectly saleable — declare the lock, name the operator, and expect the lower band. Buyback services buy locked handsets routinely because refurbishers can often unlock them in bulk.

What ends a sale is discovering the lock at the door. An inspector swaps in a test SIM as a matter of routine, and it takes about ten seconds.

Buying an imported phone: what to check before you pay

Most carrier-locked handsets in India arrive as imports, and they are usually cheap for a reason. Five checks separate a bargain from a phone you cannot resell.

  1. Insert your own SIM and confirm the phone registers on the network.
  2. On iPhone, read Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock — it should say No SIM restrictions.
  3. Check the 5G bands against your operator; some imports lack the bands used in India.
  4. Verify the IMEI on CEIR, since imported handsets have a longer and less visible history.
  5. Ask for the import invoice. Without one, Indian warranty does not apply and the age band at resale is harder to establish.

If any of those fail, price the phone as a locked import rather than as the model it appears to be. The difference at resale is substantial, and it is the buyer who discovers it later.

Frequently asked questions

Are phones sold in India carrier-locked?
Almost never through Indian retail. Carrier locks turn up on handsets imported from markets where operator contracts are the norm.
Can a locked phone be unlocked?
Legitimately, only by the carrier that locked it, usually once any contract or instalment plan is complete. The unlock is applied to the IMEI.
How much less is a locked phone worth?
Substantially — the buyer pool is limited to one network, and imported units often lack an Indian invoice and warranty as well.
Will an inspector notice a carrier lock?
Yes, within seconds, by inserting a test SIM. Declare it in the quote rather than at the door.
How do I check carrier lock status on an iPhone?
Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock. "No SIM restrictions" means the phone is unlocked; anything else names the network it is tied to.
